As the only college student in the USA Basketball player pool, UConn senior Maya Moore will have more to think about the next three weeks than helping her team win the world championships.

Moore, who has completed most of the requirements for her degree in sports media and promotion, is carrying 12 credits this semester; classes in sports law, sports management, sports in society and a research methods communications class.

And she must attend to her workload while in Spain and the Czech Republic.

"After being around Maya for three years, I know that she has a good head on her shoulders," said Tina Charles, Moore's former UConn teammate and also a member of the U.S. national team. "She knows what her priorities are, and the most important thing to her right now is her schoolwork. She's very dedicated to it."

Studying is not a task for Moore. She is a scholastic All-American with a grade-point-average above 3.7. Moore even considered applying for a Rhodes Scholarship, but she said last week she has decided against it.

"Maya has done a great job inspiring her UConn teammates by the way she puts her schoolwork first, and then being able to know how to come out [for practice or a game] and compete hard for two hours," Charles said.

It seems clear that Moore will be among the 12 players on the team for the world championships, which begin Sept. 23. She was one of the best players last weekend in exhibitions against Australia and Spain, scoring 26 points in two wins at the XL Center.

That means she will be away from Storrs until the first week of October. And that's a lot of missed classroom time.

"It's kind of tough, but the main thing for me will be to try and do something every day to get myself into a rhythm and routine, at least as much as will be possible," Moore said. "I have help. One of my classmates will be communicating with me every day; I'll call her or we'll talk on Skype. I'll keep up with her online.
