Setting An Example For Future Journalists

Posted on 09.14.2010 by Conrad Egusa

Chuck River Sports (Link: http://chuckriversports.com/) is a blog dedicated to New England sports. The blog was started by UCONN senior Michael Ryan in his journalism class. The blog grew from an idea he had to an online media website that currently has 6 to 7 student contributors. In addition to students at the University of Connecticut who help, Michael also has help from students in South Carolina.

Michael is currently a senior at UCONN and has been very involved with journalism on campus. He sees the blog he started as not only a way to write about a passion of his, but also a way to build a strong portfolio of work. Michael is very interested in pursuing a career in online journalism, and it is impressive that he has already build a following and team while being a student.

Michael knew he wanted to pursue online journalism after a class he had with Professor Rick Hancock. Professor Hancock currently works as a technology expert on Fox 61.

Michael sees the blog as not only benefitting UCONN students who are fans of New England sports, but also benefiting students who want to get involved. From an academic and resume point of view, this is an excellent opportunity for students. Online journalism and his websites are Michael’s passion.

Asked if he had anything else to say to UCONN students, Michael recommended to students to get involved in their education as soon as possible. There are a number of opportunities to make connections with professors and classmates and to create something you can be proud of.
