President of Alpha Epsilon Phi On Greek Life and Giving Back

Posted on 09.19.2010 by Conrad Egusa

Alpha Epsilon Phi is a sorority at UCONN with 110 members. It is a relatively new chapter and in less than four years the organization has grown from 40 to 110 individuals. Last year the organization won highest GPA for spring 2010, outstanding external relations, and outstanding chapter management.

I had the opportunity to speak to Rebecca Levine, who is this year’s President. Our first conversation was on the focus that Alpha Epsilon Phi puts on philanthropic events. The sorority raises money for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), which is a foundation started by a sorority sister who received aids from a blood transfusion and after giving the disease to her child, started one of largest pediatric movements. This year Alpha Epsilon Phi is holding an event called Rock for a Cure where they will be featuring 1-2 Kidz. In the spring they will also hold an annual kickball tournament called Kick for Kids.

In addition to the many charitable events, this year a goal for the sorority is to utilize technology to improve communication within the group and with alumni. Some of the ideas Rebecca talked about were having the ability to send mass texts to group members and creating an effective Facebook page. Rebecca would also like the sorority to branch out more within the UCONN community. She would like to partner in events with other organizations, for example with the multicultural sororities.

Rebecca joined the sorority as a first year student. At the time, she didn’t know if she wanted to participate in Greek life, but looking back she realizes it was one of the best decisions she made at UCONN.

Rebecca is a Health Care Management major. She received the Health Care Management Scholarship last year and impressively, also serves as the President of the Health Care Management Society. One thing Rebecca talked about was how her multiple responsibilities helped her improve her time management skills. After graduation Rebecca is looking to pursue a career in health care management with perhaps an IT focus.

Asked if there was anything she wanted to tell UCONN students, Rebecca encouraged students to not be afraid to try out new things. Nothing will harm you in going to a meeting to learn more out a new club or organization.
