Agents of Improv is a performance-based organization at UConn that was formed in 2005 because there were few outlets to learn, practice, and perform improvisational comedy on campus. The organization is open to anyone who wants to try out the performance art. One of the group’s goals is to show students that in addition to UConn excelling in its academics and athletics, UConn also has a strong base in art and performance. Agents of Improv meets on Thursdays from 9PM to 11:30PM in room 304A in the Student Union.
I had the opportunity to speak to the General Manager of Agents of Improv, Aaron J Cipollina. Aaron has always been interested in art and performing. Although he came into UConn as a math major, he changed his major to communication sciences. He is interested in pursuing television and film production after graduation.
Aaron first joined the organization because of his friends. After attending one meeting, he realized he enjoyed the experience and began attending every week. Last fall he served as the publicity manager and this year he was elected as the general manager
Agents of Improv performs both short-form and long-form improv at their shows which are all open to all UConn students. Almost all of the shows are free to attend. The organization will also occasionally organize “Urban Improvs”. These are performances in public places where the audience does not know, necessarily, that a performance is going to occur. Last year they performed an Urban Improv in Bookworms Café called a Mobius and received a standing ovation.
Asked if there was anything he wanted to say to UConn students, Aaron encouraged students to check out the show and weekly meetings. Even if you prefer not to perform, the practices are great fun to watch. You can get more information by joining the Facebook page or emailing the group at agentsofimprov@gmail.com.
